Alaska is a great place to visit with families. With an emphasis on outdoor activites and animals, the kids will love it! Here's where we stayed and played.
Getting There:
We took an Alaska Airlines flight. They have the most flights per day and some of the best rates. Lots of people think Alaska and think cruise, but this option doesn't give you much time to explore the real Alaska. There is also a ferry that runs from Seattle.
Getting Around:
One of the best options for seeing Alaska (especially for families) is by R.V. We rented ours through ABC Motorhome and Car Rental. It was great to be able to stop when we wanted, not have to pack and unpack at several locations and to snack and sleep on the road. The kids thought sleeping in the "loft" was great! Alaska Railroad runs trains from Fairbanks to Seward...it has great views, and we're always promoters of train travel, but the schedules and routes are very limited.
Places to Stay:
Alaska has lots of options for lodging from RV rentals (see above) to back woods cottages to full blown resorts. Here's where we stayed.
- Historic Anchorage Hotel - Landmark hotel in Anchorage established in 1916.
- Chena Hot Springs Resort - Located just outside Fairbanks this is one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights. This is a model green resort - they produce their own enegy using the geo-thermal energy produced by the hot springs, they heat the resort with the water as well, they are experimenting with Hydrogen storage for fuel and they grow their vegetables hydroponically ALL WINTER LONG in giant greenhouses. The resort also has hot springs, indoor/outdoor pools, dog sledding, snow mobiling, biking and lots of other activities.
- ABC Motorhome RV - For much of our time on the Kenai Peninsula, we called an RV home. The kids thought it was really exciting to sleep out in nature and it was very convenient for us - meal times were easy as we could make our own if we didn't feel like going out, we didn't have to re-pack every time we wanted to move, and the kids could do homework on the road (they loved that one!).
What to Do:
Anchorage:
- Alaska Native Heritage Center - Museum on the peoples of Alaska with outdoor villages representing the different tribes, hands-on exhibits, workshops and more.
- The Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center - Great exhibits on Alaska throughout time from the first peoples to the gold rush to the modren day oil drillers.
Cooper Landing:
- Alaska Horsemen - This horseback riding outfit is great with kids. We went on a ride around the lake. They also offer gold panning and a coordinated ride and raft trip down the Kenai River.
Homer:
- Seaside Adventure - Offering kayak tours of Kachemak Bay. It's obvious owners Rick and Dorle really love what they do and where they live. They were great with the kids, pointing out eagles and otters, pulling out tide pool creatures for them to touch, and making them sea weed soup...which Nathan loved!
- Pratt Museum - Lots of hands-on, interactive stuff here. The kids were enthralled by the weather accounts and oil spill displays. There is also a great hiking trail around back - we actually encountered a huge moose here (within ten feet of us).
Seward:
- Alaska SeaLife Center - It's the only cold-water marine center in the Western Hemisphere and it has plenty of animal displays, exhibits and hands-on demonstrations. The boys loved dissecting a squid and the puffin/seal exhibit was a hit with the whole family.
- Kenai Fjords Tours - This outfit runs expeditions into Kenai Fjords National Park with its tidewater glaciers and untamed wilderness. We took the whale watching tour of Resurrection Bay and saw seals, sheep, otters, orcas and humpback whales!
Prince William Sound:
- Auklet Charter Services - Prince William Sound has the most amazing tidewater glaciers. You can tour the bay and watch these huge chunks of ice falling off the cliffs and plummeting into the ocean with huge booms and crashes. They even arranged for the boys to go "ice" fishing which actually meant fishing for mini-icebergs...they loved it! We also hiked and saw dolphins on our journey. The boat can be chartered overnight for longer forays into the bay. The kids will love the comfy bunks below deck and the cozy kitchen area.
