#ExperiencesNotStuff: Holiday Gift Idea #7 of 12:

BIOLUMINESCENCE

Swimming in the ocean is an adventure in and of itself, but swimming in glowing waters brings it to a whole new level. Although it appears like the water is glowing, bioluminescence is actually microscopic animals reacting to movement. So, with each stroke you take, the animals begin to glow around you. There are many places in the world to experience bioluminescence including at times around San Diego, known as the Red Tide. When our kids were little, we had our first experience with bioluminescence while kayaking as a family in a bay on Vieques Island in Puerto Rico, which now re-opened to tourism, so your trip there would help in their recovery efforts. Our kids were only 3 and 1 then (thank goodness for double kayaks), but they loved seeing “Tinker Bell” flying through the water.

One of our favorite experiences was last summer near Koh Rong on our family vacation in Cambodia. The kids loved staying on this little-visited island where Survivor was filmed and at night they loved jumping off of boats and watching the glowing splash!

Happy Holidays from our family to yours! Look for the next holiday gift idea for the kids tomorrow. And remember, #ExperiencesNotStuff!

Much like substance abuse, preoccupation with death signifies that one might not be coping well with life
